Camping Poglitsch, Faak am See, Austria

Sunday 12th June

With more rain forecast over the next few days, we decided, reluctantly, that we would miss out our next planned stop at Bohinjska Bistrica.  We'd visited it briefly when we had the day out on the train from Nova Gorica - then in beautiful sunshine.  So we felt that to see it shrouded in clouds wouldn't be a good idea.  We shall return one day to see more ...  but it meant saying goodbye to Slovenia this morning ....

But it wasn't long before we'd driven to the border with Austria, and after buying our vignette to drive on their motorways (not too pricey at 8.80€ for 10 days) we came to Camping Poglistch at Faak am See.  Even when we came out of the tunnel into Austria, we could tell it was a lot drier on the roads and in the fields this side of the mountains.  Peter and Hannah and the children have been to this site and it certainly is lovely.  It's by a small pool which is linked to the main lake through a large reedbed.  The sun shone all afternoon, so we just enjoyed the peace and the view.  We did venture out for a short while on the bikes, just to see the bigger lake and get our bearings.

Monday 13th June

Lots more sunshine today, so again, we just took it easy over breakfast, did a bit of washing that dried in no time, a bit of shopping in the local Spar and then it was time for lunch!  (We are going to find it hard getting back to 'normal' life!)

We did need to find the private beach that belongs to the campsite, though.  We borrowed a key from the office and cycled to it, about a mile away.  We unlocked the gate and walked across a large grassy 'garden' that led to a tiny gap in the reeds beside the lake.  I had a paddle, with tiny fish darting about in the clear, surprisingly warm water.

But also there was a geocache waiting to be found, not too far away in the parcourrunde - a pretty forest with walking/cycling paths and lots of those fitness poles/bars/platforms etc. dotted about.  We didn't find those too difficult - we just cycled past them!  For the cache, we should have found an old mill and counted some concrete slabs - we didn't - but did find the second answer at a rushing river  (not a very pretty one with milky grey water) and managed to work out where the cache would be.  It was further up the same river at a bridge (very noisy with the grey water thundering past).  Although we looked and felt around for a while (this is normal geocaching technique!) we hadn't come up with anything and were just about to leave when I spotted it!  It then involved John lying down on the bridge with an arm through the bars and me directing him to the box tucked under the structure.  Sorry - no photo of this as I was much too busy - but this is the box safely back in its place.  (Blue square underneath on left.)

  1. We are dodging the rain too. We had a good morning exploring Terrasson-Lavilledieu this morning - wondering why there was only a handful of people there but when we got to the number 1 attraction, we found it was closed in Tuesdays! Never mind, we will go back on Thursday when it is market day. We have sauntered around beautiful little villages - our satnav taking us by scenic routes, some narrower than others! We are back at the cottage now but every time we think we will go out for a walk, the rain comes down. We are sitting under the canopy on our terrace and it's OK as long as we push the water off the top with a brush every time it stops raining, we not worried as it is a beautiful peaceful garden with the bees still buzzing in the honeysuckle and the birds singing. Happy holidays xxx
