Annecy town

Sunday 15th May

A beautiful sunny morning, so we set off on our bikes, turning left this time, to go to Annecy town.  The cycle track was pretty busy with families on bikes, roller bladers, joggers, extremely serious (and terrifyingly fast) cyclists and of course, people just like us!  After a coffee/chocolate at a cafe by the canal, we went on a boat trip on the lake for an hour and ate the snacks that should have been yesterday's lunch.

Lovely views, pretty villages with houses with immaculate gardens down to the waterside, a couple of chateaux and backed by rocky mountains.  Despite a little hazy cloud on the top of the mountains, there were numerous paragliders floating around too.  Back in the town, after a sit in the park by the lake, we wandered the streets of the old town following directions for a geocache.

We found various statues, buildings and features that we probably would have missed otherwise and answered all the questions (like finding a date or how many windows in the castle entrance).  We also walked to the railway station and beyond to find the hotel where Jacki and Philip will be staying later in the summer - it looked really nice and it's in a very quiet area away from all the crowds in the town.

Our light lunch today meant that we could indulge in our tradition in France - gateaux on a Sunday.

The bike ride back to Sevrier was even more hairy, with so many people vying for space on the track - the worst being those bikes pulling baby buggies and the high-speed, head down, racers! But actually, it's so good to see so many people out on a Sunday enjoying the fresh air and warm sunshine.

We've decided not to move on tomorrow, but have a lazy day and get some washing done.  The forecast is for more sunshine.

  1. Hi John and Ann

It is good to read about your travels and see that you are enjoying Annecy, it looks as beautiful as ever! The citizens there certainly do enjoy their outdoor pursuits; we can remember being almost mown down by an enormous posse of rollerbladers one evening on that lakeside path! I suppose the climate there is rather more favourable to being outside!

The climate here continues to perplex us, some hot gloriously sunny days last week, and then the temperature plummeted on Saturday. But still dry, for the moment. Jacki, Wendy and I made the most of a sunny morning to take a walk at Nymans, and I'm glad to report that the cheese scones were up to their usual standards!

Talking of Nymans, my quest to create my own Nymans-style summer border continues. However Fred has started to grumble about the garden centre bills, and I have so far only filled about a third of the space! I can see why Nymans has its own nursery, perhaps I will have to carry out a night-time raid...

Saturday morning saw me at Horley Methodist Church for a 2017 Stationing briefing. I can't believe we have to go through all that again! But hopefully with a better outcome. Later on Fred and I went to Chichester to see Hugh Bonneville in Ibsen's 'An Enemy of the People', which was certainly very good, particularly the second half.

On Sunday Rob delivered a great service for Pentecost and fired us all up to be positive about the year ahead.

I've got a busy week ahead, including a day in London with Keri tomorrow, Messy Church on Thursday and a Christian Aid coffee morning on Saturday (must remember to make some cakes!)

Hope the sun continues to shine on you!
    Lots of love
